Welfare
It’s our job to make sure that every Halifax student gets the most out of University life. We aim to keep you physically and mentally well and ensure that there is nothing to prevent you having the best experience possible at University.
We offer support in two main ways; as a point of information and a point of provision. There are Drop-in sessions starting in Week 2 and running alternate weeks, and the more informal ‘chill-out’ session starting in Week 3, which also run every other week. These are available to all students, of all years, and can cover anything from the smallest issue to large ones. Come if you have issues to work through or just want to get way from it all for half an hour. If we can’t help we will provide you with information of someone who will! If you need advice or just information about your money, your health, your course, or something more general, we’re dedicated to ensure you have a positive experience at Halifax.
Ayaz Hussain, Vice President of Welfare
Should you need any health provisions such as condoms, Chlamydia tests, pregnancy tests, attack alarms, or information about related issues don’t hesitate to contact us by email so we can help you out.
Tea With Auntie Jordan
“Tea With Auntie Jordan” is a fun new way for you to chat to the Welfare Team over a nice cuppa in confidence of the HCSA office or on the sofas in JJs. These sessions will run at the same time every week and is an alternative point of contact to your welfare tutor.
We will be handing out free condoms, lubricant and (if needed) pregnancy tests. Any information disclosed to us is completely confidential and we will do our best to help sort out any welfare-related problems. If you need advice or just information about your money, your health, your course, or something more general, we’re dedicated to ensure you have a positive experience at Halifax. If we cannot handle the problem ourselves, I’m sure we can direct you to someone who can!
LGBT
LGBT is an initialism referring collectively to lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. In modern usage, the term LGBT is intended to emphasize a diversity of “sexuality and gender identity-based cultures” andis sometimes used to refer to anyone who is non-heterosexual instead of exclusively to people who are homosexual, bisexual, or transgender.
The college has an excellent welfare system, where any person LGBT or otherwise is guaranteed a helpinghand in their moment of need. If you are a person who defines as L, G, B or T and you want to chat just get intouch with either the Halifax College Welfare Team or the Halifax College LGBT Welfare rep.
Housing
Who?
Choose your housemates wisely! You have to live with them for a whole year! Don’t automaticallypick your boozing partner without considering how they live, in fact same goes for everyone!
No doubt there will be people you want to continue living with and people you don’t want to livewith. There may even be lots of people you want to live with that won’t fit in a house (in this caseyou may want to look for several houses in close proximity – if you get in early that’s going to beeasier). The best advice is not to live with people you feel sorry for, if you think they are great, thenof course fine, but if not, it can work out for the worst.
You need a good house with good friends to work well in and enjoy and you must put this fact first inyour decision making. Also be aware that if you are living with other people, your friendship can goeither way in the long run – choose your housemates wisely!
When?
You want to start looking around February or March, perhaps earlier if you want a large house.Obviously it’s first come first served but you will always be able to pick something up in the summerterm. THERE IS NO RUSH – we cannot stress this enough.
Take your time, there is no need to miss lectures etc. for viewings, just make appointmentsaccordingly and make sure you all agree and have seen the house in enough detail. You are givingthe landlord your money in the long run and they should accommodate you (if they don’t, thinktwice about going with them!)
It might be a good idea to arrange a second viewing and take pictures to show parents etc what’s onoffer!
Any issues or concerns, please do not hesistate to contact me! ah644@york.ac.uk
