This week's UGM (Vote now on http://www.yusu.org/democracy/ugm) is crucial to getting the university to sign up to some key ethical issues. It only takes 2 mintues and will show that Halifaxers are behind the ethical movement... 1)Firstly the UNIVERSITY'S GAS AND ELECTRICITY POLICY (which we're unfortunately locked into for another few years) can be vastly improved and made more environmentally friendly. This can be acheived by swapping to a supplier who uses renewable energy - this isn't difficult to do - therefore showing that the student body wants such a swap...vote FOR york to improve its energy ethics. 2)CARRIER BAGS, despite being biodegrable from campus outlets, are still being overused and needlessly thrown away. We need to find alternatives to this use-once throw away culture. Introducing more choice of reusable bags (made of jupe or hemp) into campus outlets and following this up with awareness campaigns will reduce this. Vote FOR reducing carrier bag usage. 3)Finally we'd like to see the University stock up on more FAIRTRADE PRODUCTS(such as fairtrade cola). This has been done at other universities and students there have shown the demand for these products - why isn't york following this trend? Vote FOR the uni to bring in greater fairtrade choice. So please vote on these issues and show support for the environment. Another way to show support is to join in with the OUTGANG LITTER PICK on wednesday afternoon joined by the York conservatio volunteers. There's going to be free tea and biscuits for those who help out. Come down at 1.30 behind Lindley Court where the playing field car-pak is. Thanks!
