If coming to university and meeting lots of new and exciting people is essential to your first year experience then Halifax College is the place for you! Halifax is known for it's size, sports and outgoing nature! The close proximity of the accommodation, which is divided into different courts, not only gives you a common identity with other people in your court but also leads to inter-court mixing – which we strongly encourage and promote throughout your first year, resulting in firm friendships that can stay for life. Halifax College is the only college that uses the house format of accommodation (every other college has the corridor system). Living in a house helps students settle those first day nerves, because it reduces the psychological impact of living away from home for a long period of time. Houses are spacious with generous sized living areas with more than enough storage space whether you play a sport that needs a lot of kit or just have a lot of clothes they’re very accommodating! Houses range from 10 - 20. This size is perfect whether you’re shy or outgoing! The houses have a pretty simple lay out, bedrooms on all three floors and bathrooms on the top two floors and then a fully equipped kitchen on the ground floor where’s there’s plenty of storage room and cooking space for all those ambitious student meals to be cooked! The only different court is St Lawrence, where the kitchens lead directly out into the central grassed area; the other kitchens are separated by a small corridor. Halifax College has its own small supermarket, which saves the walk to campus if you’re peckish! And its own laundrette so you’re not going home every weekend to get your clothes washed!! We also have our own common room – JJ’s, fully equipped with sky tv, xbox 360, coffee and tea making facilities and lots of sofas for those days where you just feel like lounging around! Some Halifax events are held here including the weekly quiz and Chill out sessions held by the welfare committee! All the courts surround a grassed central court which is perfect for socialising in those warm summer evenings. And Halifax events are perfect for meeting new friends. Whether it’s a social event held in JJ’s or on campus in one of the bars, or a trip to another city, there’s something for everyone! Halifax also combines with other colleges or even the whole university to put on larger events as well. Inter-college events are particularly important whether it’s sport, music or dressing up and parading to town to collect money for charity! As you can see there’s plenty going on around Halifax and right from when you get out of your car on that nerve-wracking first day there is always a friendly face to greet you whether it’s your two STYC’s (Second and Third Year Contact) who will be around to help you through your uni life, or a porter guiding you in the right direction – who will do anything from signing for your parcels to lending you the money for a taxi if you’re been stranded in town! We’re all about giving you the uni experience that you want, and we’re not known as the Mighty Halifax for nothing! |
